Alternative Treatment Series: Self-Hypnosis for Mental Health: A Skill You Can Take Home

In our last post, we looked at clinical hypnosis guided by a therapist. But one of hypnosis's most practical features is that it doesn't always require a professional in the room. Self-hypnosis — putting yourself into a focused, receptive state and guiding your own suggestions — is a skill you can learn and carry with you anywhere.

Why it works

Self-hypnosis operates on the same principles as guided hypnosis: a state of absorbed, focused attention that quiets the mental chatter and makes the mind more receptive to therapeutic suggestions — "I can handle this moment," "my body knows how to settle." With practice, many people can drop into that state quickly, using a cue like a slow exhale or the phrase they've trained. Regular use appears to lower baseline emotional reactivity, giving you a larger reserve before stress becomes overwhelming (Psychology Today).

How to begin

Self-hypnosis is generally considered low-risk and safe for most people — you stay in control the entire time. It's typically taught through a therapist, a class, or a reputable app with guided recordings, and works best for manageable everyday challenges like stress, sleep, and situational anxiety rather than severe symptoms.

That last point is the honest caveat: self-hypnosis is a wellness and coping skill, not a substitute for therapy or medication when those are needed. But as a daily practice that steadies your nervous system between sessions — many people pair it beautifully with ongoing therapeutic work — it's hard to beat for cost and convenience.
